Lab 6 - Sub-Saharan Africa
This week we learned about Sub-Saharan Africa. Many of the physical landforms in this area are due to the movement of tectonic plates. this movement have caused some of the deepest lakes in the world. This area is also home to the Nile River which is known as the longest river and has been used to transport people and good and the land around it is known to be good for farming. Sub-Saharan Africa also holds many highland and plateau areas and tropical basin areas as well. A downfall of this area is the malaria epidemic. It is shown that about 90% of deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa is due to malaria and it is costing them a lot of money.
On the map I made this week it the darker the purple the more cases of malaria and the lighter the purple is the less cases of malaria there are in that area. We are comparing this to the population size, roads, inland ports and clinic locations. Based on this map, the areas with the least amount of malaria cases have higher populations than areas with more malaria cases. We are also able to see where the clinics are on the map. When I first made this map I thought that the upper north clinic was the most important due to there being high malaria in its area however it is not as accessible since there are not many roads surrounding it. On the other hand, the Bibiani clinic is in a bit of a higher malaria area with many roads surrounding it making it more accessible and possibly more useful.
