Lab 6 - Sub Saharan Africa

Image
Lab 6 - Sub-Saharan Africa               This week we learned about Sub-Saharan Africa. Many of the physical landforms in this area are due to the movement of tectonic plates. this movement have caused some of the deepest lakes in the world. This area is also home to the Nile River which is known as the longest river and has been used to transport people and good and the land around it is known to be good for farming. Sub-Saharan Africa also holds many highland and plateau areas and tropical basin areas as well. A downfall of this area is the malaria epidemic. It is shown that about 90% of deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa is due to malaria and it is costing them a lot of money.           On the map I made this week it the darker the purple the more cases of malaria and the lighter the purple is the less cases of malaria there are in that area. We are comparing this to the population size, roads, inland ports and cli...

Lab 5 - Middle and South America

Image
Lab 5 - Middle and South America       This week we learned about Middle and South America. In this area was where the Mayan Empire lived and to this day there are still decedents living in these areas today. North and South America are divided by the isthmus of Panama. In middle and South America there are many tectonic plates, causing the area to be vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanos. The hot and tropical areas are great for crop production for things like bananas and rice. South America is relatively flat and is home of the Amazon forest and the Amazon river which is considered the largest river in the world.      This map shows 4 different things. The whole green area is Brazils legal Amazon, which is a section of the amazon forest that is protected for development and conservation. The lined sections are Brazils Indigenous Territories. The colorful dots shoe where different minerals are mined. Lastly the colorful sections are the differe...

Lab 4: North America

Image
Lab 4 - North America     This week we focused on North America which traditionally extends from the Canadian Arctic through the United States, Mexico and to the narrow Isthmus, Panama. Most of Canadas areas consist of boreal forests that are rich in minerals. In North America, they have experienced sprawl where urban areas and neighborhoods are growing and relying on cars to get around due to it not being walkable. some places have even started overlapping with others. there are some areas that are trying to switch to new urbanism that is walkable towns where everything is nearby.      On this map of the United States, the purple tones show how populated an area is and the Ferris wheels show where there are amusement parks. I noticed that across the US, amusement parks were usually placed in areas that are more populated. Not only that but most of them are on the edges, closer to the coast. I believe that the amusement parks are in areas with higher popul...

Lab 3: Russia

Image
Lab 3: Russia     This week we were focusing on Russia. Russia is the largest Country in the world, having 11 time zones and reaching both Europe and Asia. While it is big, its population is relatively small compared to its size. the west tends to be more populated due to it having more mountains whereas the east is more lower elevation planes that are usually less populated. One thing that makes Russia stand out is its rich soil allowing for good agriculture.      today I made a map that shows 3 things: The area where black earth(rich soil) is located, how high the population is and what the GDP is. The map does show that the western areas have higher populations since the pink circles are larger compared to the east. I also noticed that the GDP is sort of randomized. there isn't much distinction is difference of GDP throughout Russia other than southern and north Caucasian that has lower GDP. One last thing that i noticed is the two areas with the highes...

Lab 2: Europe Population Over 65

Image
Lab 2: Europe Population Over 65     Europe is a wonderful area with many perks. its soil is very rich and it is surrounded by ocean. Not only that but everything is relatively close together making it easy to travel from place to place. Surprisingly, even though Europe is in the northern area, the climate is temperate. this is partially because of the gulf streams bring warm water to the coasts of Europe which warms the wind. while it has many good aspects one thing that it is facing is its elderly population growing.      In this map it shows the what areas are higher and lower in population of people over 65. This is known as a choropleth map that uses different shades of colors to show properties and density in different areas. this map uses a relative form in order to show this data.  We are using relative values in percentage form rather than whole population numbers because it is more comparable. Some areas have higher populations in general so...

lab 1: global population projections

Image
Lab 1: global population projections          For this lab, I was looking at the world map instead of one smaller area. The different colors on the map show different areas population projection. The darker the red the higher the population is supposed to get and if a place is blue it means that the population is going to decrease. Based on this map the place that will increase the most are areas in Africa and the places that will decrease the most is Russia, China and Greenland. Something that I noticed was that some areas that are expected to decrease are still expected to have high populations. For example, China may be blue but is still expected to have the second highest population even with the decrease. This shows that while a population may increase or decrease it doesn't mean that they are going not have the highest or the lowest population.

about me and orientation lab

Hi, My name is Khaliya Jennings and I am a new student at Gulf Coast State College. This year I am taking world geography and I will be taking everyone along with me to share what I learn. A little bit about me is I am 19 years old and recently just moved to Panama City Beach Florida from Sonoma County California to go to college. Both my best friend and i moved into a house together in PCB and cant wait to make many new memories. My goal is to graduate with an aviation major and eventually fly for a major airline company and travel the world.                This is my first map in my geography class. it shows the sightings of box turtles, Panama City crayfish critical habitat and crayfish range. Crayfish are currently on the threatened species list and have the potential to eventually be on the endangered species act. These areas highlighted on the maps show areas that would be goo...
